Vivid Sydney Light Festival 2019
All carbon within the bodies of every single human being on Earth was once produced in the centre of a star millions of miles away. With current technology it would take just under 80,000 years to reach the nearest star. This seemingly impossible truth makes us think and contemplate about space, time and our place in all of it. In order to bring this feeling of wander we brought the cosmos to Vivid 2019; This is Cosmonauts.
Cosmonauts is an immersive installation that produces the illusion and movement of space through lights and reflection. A suspended array of colourful RGB LEDS hang and flicker in a series of programmed rhythmic patterns orbited by two rings of large upright mirrors. The journey of cosmonaut occurs in 3 phases, allured from afar by the gentle glimmer of a galaxy of LEDs, visitors are drawn towards it. The giant mirrors frame the space with the openings in the rings naturally becoming pathways and entrances. As the visitor reach into the centre, they both activate the installation and vanish into the infinite instantaneously. Over 500 LEDs reflected infinitely between 20 mirrors creates a mesmerising galaxy of stars. Within, the visitors contemplate the scale of their existence and the passage of time amongst a dazzling display of light and materiality.
With cosmonauts we motivate each stardust filled traveller to explore the galaxy, to look within and grasp a better understanding of what they were put here to do.
